Trajectory
Research
- The Research Group in Mathematical and Computational Biology (BIOMAC) at Universidad de los Andes began its activities in 2010 and has graduated two doctoral students and over 10 master's students. In this group, we apply mathematical and computational tools to model biological and related systems through simulations of models that help understand and reproduce observed and hypothetical behaviors.
- Our research is based on dynamic systems, capturing variable changes through systems of differential equations, deterministic or probabilistic systems, and stochastic systems. Model parameterization for our projects is carried out through fieldwork, laboratory experiments, or literature-based approaches. These models enable us to understand the processes behind complex phenomena involving biological, medical, and social variables: Models and field data collection serve as BIOMAC’s laboratory. The group focuses on three main areas:
- Eco-epidemiology: Research is conducted on the dynamics of snakebite envenoming and the transmission of infectious diseases such as Chagas, Leishmaniasis, and Dengue in Colombia.
- Mathematical physiology: Work is being done on computational neuroscience and mathematical modeling of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems.
- Modeling health events: Efforts are focused on models to improve emergency care dynamics and organ allocation for transplants.
- These and other projects are welcomed and supported in this group. Welcome!
